1st half of bible prophets are close to leaders. Nathan, moses, & deborah = stories are historical narratives, etc. Have power can get away with things. Hebrew word for prophet - navi , nevi"im - one who is called . In greek - prophets - a person speaking for god (can be man or woman) Up to david, prophets have advisors to leaders and kings, god speaks through them, warn of turning away from god; political advisor. *temple has been built and torn down 3 times. 3 periods during which pple feel that everything is ending. In the new testament prophets become more of free agents set the stage for jesus. Prophets like jeremiah are actually part of the elite official prophet to the king. Warning of doom because god is ignored or rejected, denouncing errors of hebrews and their enemies and pointing out misfortune caused by turning away from god and mistreatment of the poor.
