In the new testament prophets become more of free agents set the stage for jesus. Prophets like jeremiah are actually part of the elite official prophet to the king. Warning of doom because god is ignored or rejected, denouncing errors of hebrews and their enemies and pointing out misfortune caused by turning away from god and mistreatment of the poor.
