Cities with a population with more than 10 mil people: tokyo, mexico city. Most of the mc are in the global south. Geography off megacity growth has shifted to from north america and europe to asia. They contain one in ten people in our urban population. They are responsible for 15% of gdp. It is not just more people in the same place. There are new technologies that allow for cities to handle more people. Megacities are a qualitatively different urban form, not just bigger: for 5 main reasons. Fears about very bug cities is ingrained in out popular imaginaries. In the 20th century: over a certain size, the would be a diseconomies of scales. The bigger that something gets, the more it will cost. Ex. housing there is only so much land you could build housing on, and how much it will cost. You only have so many roads so you may create huge traffic jams long travel time.
