Document Summary

Longer life means more potential for chronic disease to develop. Because chronic disease are long lasting they have specific implications. Don"t need to memorize figures, but have an understanding of being able to rank diseases on what"s more common, or which disease is most expensive. Most common are cvd, diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory disease. Development of cvd is a chronic condition. The plaque that builds up is from cholesterol and fat circulating in the circulatory system. Tend to think of this as an elderly condition, but now we see a prevalence of atherosclerosis in younger children. Cvd accounts for much of the chronic disease burden. Statins are medications that have been successful on lowering chlosterol levels in individuals who already have high cholesterol and also in individuals who have normal level. Using medicine is a very biomedical approach. Medication use is not historically what we would have the public health department to take, we should focus on lifestyle and diet.
