Immunity: immune system"s capacity to protect individuals from disease by recognizing and eliminating potentially pathogenic (disease generating agents) Purpose to minimize chances of getting disease, pathogens: and to get rid of unneeded components in body. Body is really well designed to exclude pathogens: regards to layout of body. Anatomy of immune system: physical and chemical barriers, leukocytes (white blood cells, lymphoid tissues. External/internal environment: body comes into contact with many bad things. E. g. touch what many others have touched: body protected by exterior layer (skin) Interacts with almost everything: entry and exit sites of body come into contact with so much. Is bordered by epithelial layer which helps protect entry into body. Pathogens can enter into internal environment, or can start circulating throughout body. All the contact areas have specialized cells which know where pathogens may cause trouble: but body has created layer which allows for protection; cells which patrol area.
