Not highly infectious (cid:0) may be related to genetic susceptibility. Mainly affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes. Risk: leprosy can affect people of all races all around the world. Most common in warm, wet areas in the tropics and subtropics. Most common between the ages of 10 and 14 and in those aged 35-44 years old. Armadillos do not develop human type leprosy; disease usually more severe and fa tal. Low body temperature (28-33 c) may promote the disease. Mid-1980(cid:0)s - concern of being infected from armadillos to humans. Difficult to detect since 5 yr incubation period(slow working bacteria) The research subjects (mice and the nine banded armadillos) transmitted the di sease this lead to social panic.
