Stage 1: position, composition, intertextuality: formal staging of news text, before close study of content, position: within the newspaper/broadcast/ webpage. Where is it on the news paper, when does the story get introduced by the anchor, is it on the home page of the website: composition: nucleus, photo elements, narrative, intertextuality: references to other reports, articles, events. Real world connections, or themes, within the actual stories (refereeing to media, social media, other stories) voices are heard. Structured in a functional order very different from crime fiction structure, crime fiction always brings you to the end, news story is the complete opposite style of genre. Stage 4: lexical choice (looking at word choices: how do certain words support wider overarching narrative sin society, how do certain ideological beliefs, then you ask if the fine-grained analysis make sense in the world.
