Document Summary

Lecture 5: identify types of distributions, describe complementary distribution, be able to solve phonology problems, recognize phonological processes. Affricates [t , d ] do involve complete closure but count them as affricates instead of stops. From now on, transcribe the aspiration for voiceless consonants where applicable. Phonology is the study of the abstract principles that underlie the patterning sounds in a language. Tom burton tried to steal a butter plate ( 6 allophones of /t/) /p/ becomes aspirated at the beginning of a word or stressed syllable. (/pat/ or /spat/) This rules applies to all voiceless stops. (p,t,k) Phonemic representation is what is represented in the lexicon. How it actually sounds is the phonetic representation. Minimal pairs are automatically contrastive/overlapping distribution and therefore are separate phonemes. If asked for evidence, just show why it"s a minimal pair. A pair that would be minimal except for irrelevant differences. But a near minimal pairs. (refer to slides) (slide 17)
