Document Summary
Lecture 11 review of relative clauses, exam prep. All about moving wh-word to [spec, cp] position (for english: includes: what + np, who, which + np, when, where, why. Wh-movement occurs in wh-questions and relative clauses. Take the sentence: i saw the student who left. The cp is modifying [the student], therefore we need an extra np. Vp internal subject hypothesis states that the subject of any verb starts in the spec of vp, moves to spec, tp because: epp (every sentence needs a subject, case filter (to get nominative case from t) From tp, it moves to spec cp because of wh-movement: ti t"i = dp movement (spec, tp, t"i spec, cp = wh-movement. Cp has to be an adjunct, because any noun can take a relative clause; whereas only some can take compliments. Take the sentence: i know the chair on which she was sitting.
