Document Summary

Office hours: monday 3 5:30pm, or by appointment. Introduces students to key terms and concepts in media studies and provides an overview of theoretical and critical understandings of media. Students develop their understanding of the political, economic, social and cultural contexts in which mediated images and texts are produced, distributed, and consumed. Media studies is a vibrant and expansive scholarly discipline with a history that dates back at least to the 1930s. It was at this time that scholars began question the social and cultural influence of media such as radio, newspapers, film and even comic books. Over time, the forms of media that scholars have studied have increased dramatically, as have the theoretical and analytical perspectives brought to bear on the study of media. This section of mdsa01 will introduce you to the wide range of topics, questions, concepts and perspectives that animate contemporary media and communication studies.
