Three dimensions of (networked) idenity (schmidt, p. 368-9) Each of these describes aspects of idenity usually taken for granted oline, but which become more lexible in networked society. Here"s a couple of simple quesions for you . Experiences, hobbies, educaion, family, friends and peer group, geography, inluences, race, religion, occupaion, media we consume, desire. Documentaion, choice of occupaion, projecion on social media, clothing, peer group, physical appearance and how you present yourself (how you do your hair, makeup, grooming, etc), Symbolic interacionism: we present ourselves slightly diferently to diferent people. Idenity is lexible and changeable, and people are highly skilled in varying their self-presentaion appropriately. (marwick, p. 356) Early celebratory theories of idenity as disembodied, a workshop , or post-human. Three reasons why has this idea proven limited. 1) most people sick to who they are online. 2) idea does not address structural features of idenity. 3) online plaforms help structure idenity presentaion.
