NROB60H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Spatial Memory, Neurogenesis, Motor Skill
Document Summary
Greatest plasticity in brain change and mold functions. Large role in learning and memory encode new memory: not involved in working/procedural memory. First brain area to show damage in alzheimer"s disease. High seizure susceptibility and low seizure threshold. Vulnerable to lack of oxygen (ischemia and hypoxia) Common in alzheimer"s doesn"t necessarily a cause and effect relationship. Location and organization of hc and dentate gyrus. Hippocampal formation include: dentate gyrus, hippocampus proper, pre and para-subiculum, entorhinal cortex. Cell bodies arranged in orderly fashion with different connectivity zones. 3 layers: molecular layer acellular, not many cell bodies, above cell layer, lots of dendrites, granule layer principle layer, polymorphic layer/hilus diffusely cellular, below. Principle layers of pyramidal cells (within granule layer) 3 layers. 3 pathways: perforant pathway entorhinal afferent. Carry sensory info on granular cell of dentate gyrus: moss fiber pathway axons of granular layer synapose. Ca1 dendrite end in tufts that reach hippocampal fissure.
