PHLA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Justin Bieber, Empiricism, Continental Philosophy
Document Summary
In looking at the math example and the justin bieber example there is a difference in a priori, a posteriori, and epistemic property. With math, you just need to look at it and see, there is (no experience needed), however with weighing justin bieber someone had needed to weigh him (through actual experience) There is a metaphysical difference about this example. Because there are not necessarily taught anything about knowing which chick is what gender. Contingent: anything that could have been otherwise. Ex. all the hurricanes that are happening, that the eiffel tower is named after a guy named eiffel etc. Necessary: something that has to be, some fact of our universe that just has to be true. Metaphysics and epistemology: how do we approach these questions: empiricism vs rationalism. Empiricism: puts and emphasis on knowledge and experience (five senses)
