The non-identity effect: some (but not all) of our decisions and actions will have an affect on the existence of future persons. Some of our actions are existence-conferring actions that influence both who conceives children and when they do so. If an action is existence-conferring, it involves the non-identity. Choosing a risky energy policy versus a safe energy policy (parfit 112: risky choice existence of risky people (who suffer) Cancel t. v. show have a child. Lower gas prices, ppl drive more, meet more ppl, do diff things that causes more child to be born. Creates risky ppl who will suffer in the future. Ppl wouldn"t suffer in the future, but it"s a diff group of ppl: safe choice existence of safe people (who suffer less or not at all)
