PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Stage Hypnosis, Sensory Deprivation, Sleep-Learning
Lecture 15
Altered States of Consciousness
• Our previous discussion of consciousness was focused on the “normal conscious” experience of
an awake, sober, self-controlled individual… but “normal” consciousness can be alter by:
1. Sleep
2. Hypnosis
3. Drugs
4. Sensory deprivation
The mystery of sleep: why do we sleep?
• Sometimes evolution-based arguments are too flexible
• One theory: sleep must be doing something very important, if not, we would adapt to try and
sleep less
• Another theory: evolution explains how sleep just keeps us out of trouble and conserving energy
Stages of Sleep
• When we developed an EEG, studying of sleep patterns became more prominent
• These pick up the electrical activities of the brain
• There are lots of electrical noise coming from the brain
•
• Their dreams may reflect the eye twitching
• When they are dreaming, they are experiencing something as if they were awake
• Somewhere around the end of stage 4, the brain releases chemicals that paralyzes the body
- Some people don’t have these chemicals that paralyzes the body

Looking at their sleep patterns, and asked if people who were sleeping better perform better. Physical sports that need critical thinking, or deep conscious thought are effected by sleep. Sleep and learning (consolidation: deep sleep learning of information. Give students textbook and tell them to study it. The people who did the best with memorization and learning are the ones who slept regularly: rem sleep learning of skills. If you change the experiment task to learning a skill.
