Stimulus produces physiological state and brain interprets it. 2 major neural structures for emotions emotionally. Primitive part of the limbic system, quickly processes biological relevant information. Advanced part of the brain, slowly processes information rationally. Although adults are great at controlling emotions, the more emotional we are the harder it is to control. First 6 months infant: do not self regulate, the parents help regulate the emotions. After 5 months: starts to self-regulate through self-soothing and gaze aversions. But most is in relation to temperament. Temperament in early infancy correlates with personality in the future.
