Group cognition is deeply engrained in human evolution. Will begin to form alliances and prejudices for individuals similar vs different than you. Can put mentality around arbitrary groups that we are put in. Even young infants and children exhibit in group and group discrimination. Showed them two women side by side and tried to make the women different enough that the babies could tell the difference but not different enough that they would have a bias. Showed the babies speaking their native language vs non-native language (english or french) Put women back up on the screen silently. Measured their preferential looking patterns -> where they look longer on the screen. Babies were looking longer at woman who was speaking their native language. At 10 months, babies are able to direct their reaching and grasp for objects objects. Women stood side by side and offered an identical toy. Chose woman who was speaking their native language.
