First main priority of an infant is their perceptual development perceptual motor cognitive. Babies come into contact with objects and they have to form some sort of representation of those objects. Language is very much tied to cognitive development because it is the symbolic representation of things it shows functions of the objects. Critical periods infant particularly ready to learn certain things at certain points in its development and maturation and if it doesn"t learn those things at those times, it has a lot more difficulty learning them later. Language acquisition is best at 3-7 years old and after 7 y. o. there is a steady decline in learning a new language. Recognition of mother"s and father"s voice wile in utero builds the relationship early on. When something becomes highly practiced, it becomes automatic we have little control over thought processes.
