Document Summary

Psya02 intro to psych week 1 january 9, 2013. Animals most definitely use their bodies and sounds to communicate: the purpose of language is to communicate. Human language is different, it allows one to transport knowledge and ideas across time and space. Three things are key to our domination of the planet: learning does not need to be direct, a) bi - pedalism, freeing up our hands, our frontal cortex which figures out useful ways to use our hands. Way bigger than anyone else in the animal kingdom: language, the ability to transmit all this across generations. Share our minds, pass down stories and etc. Many animals, dog"s especially, have strong receptive language abilities. An organism must use language in a very flexible way to impress all scientists: some even have some language production abilities, words are symbols used to represent and convey ideas. Called abstract symbol system can be used very dynamically.
