Document Summary
Social media literacy and health shops with youth. Agenda: myths & misconceptions, what is an eating disorder, clinical classifications, medical complications, causes & comorbidity, treatment, prevention. Statistics: an estimated 1 million canadians currently meet the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder. That"s 4% of the population, (statistics canada, 2016): eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, 10% of those with anorexia nervosa will die within 10 years of the onset of the disorder (sullivan, 2002) The male prevalence is lower due to self- selection bias because a lot of males might be suffering from eating disorders and not disclose it. Some studies estimate the clinical prevalence of eating disorders in college women to be as high as 20% and 5-10% in college men (wilkerson, hackman, rush, usdan, & Smith, 2017): approximately 60% of college women report engaging in chronic dieting and binge eating (hunt & forbush, 2016)
