PSYB32H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Affect Theory, Emotion Recognition, Mary Ainsworth
Document Summary
Emotion -> pleasant or unpleasant experience to an environment through behavioural or physiological response. Max maximally discriminant facial movement coding system. Uses facial action units rated most characteristic of emotions (look at muscle contraction) Paul ekman 6 basic emotions: joy, anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise. Early emergence in development and universal; by 1yr old should express emotion and recognize. Recognize emotion with age, females better at basic emotion. Labarbara test of emotions with 4-6 mo babies. Results: looks at positive emotion over negative; identifies positive as valuable; no discrimination between negative emotion (not present early); discrimination starts at 4 mo. Field and walden production and recognition of emotions with 3-5 yrs old. Children better at producing at this age, not much discrimination. Tomkins affect theory: basic emotions have dedicated neural circuitry that is stimulated by environment that induces a response in the: ans, behaviour tendency, and facial expression.
