Cognitions: refer to thoughts, beliefs, expectancies, attitudes, perceptions. Cbt approaches have been (and continue to be) the focus of much empirical research in recent decades. Generally: strong support for therapeutic effects across a number of common psychiatric conditions, including: major depression, anxiety disorders, certain eating disorders. We can change our emotional and physiological reactions by modifying how we think or how we perceive a situation, as well as by modifying how we behave in response to a situation. Built on central theoretical assumptions: how we interpret and react to events is based on our cognitions (beliefs, judgments, expectations, etc) about the events, maladaptive cognitions (unhelpful cause) can cause emotional and behavioural symptoms and disorders.
