Document Summary

One is that to perceive an object at an odd angle, we have to mentally rotate it first ! thus, it"s a really important function of mental imagery. Biederman came up with geon theory (objects are made of geons). He says you don"t have to rotate anything; all you have to do is recognize the geons in the object. He said that the only reason you"d have to rotate an object mentally would be if you couldn"t perceive an important geon of the object. Structural equivalence: a more complex drawing takes longer to draw; therefore, a more complex image takes longer to visualize in your mind. Thus, the more complex the mental image, the longer it takes to create. Evidence suggests that these images are formed in pieces. Example, when people are shown this alligator and asked to image it, the bottom one takes longer to mentally image because it"s more detailed.
