PSYB57H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: G Protein–Coupled Receptor, Olfactory Receptor Neuron, Lingual Papilla
Document Summary
Immanuel kant- the sense of smell is (cid:498)superlative(cid:499), he believed it was one of our best senses- back then smells were very prominent because of the sewage system. Odors: olfactory sensations that are caused by ordorants. In order for the odorants to be smelled they have to be 1) volatile 2) small. 3)hydrophobic *however, some molecules meet these requirements yet we still can"t smell them (cid:523)e. g. natural gas like methane or carbon monoxide(cid:524) Nose (cid:523)this is the secondary purpose, it"s first purpose is breathing(cid:524) Olfactory epithelium: (cid:498)the retina(cid:499) of the nose- detects ordorants in inhaled air . The cilia have odorant receptors (ors) on the tips that interact with odorants to cause action potentials. Each osn expresses only one types of receptor. Lesion to olfactory nerves causes ansomia: total inability to smell this can usually be caused by sinus infections or head trauma to our cribriform plate (bone structure that separate the nose and the brain)
