Lecture 3: maintenance of stereotypes: how are stereotypes maintained, we do not see the world as it is, we view our world as our own interpretative lens. Socio-cultural: (need to revisit this section: reflects specific cultural values, result from conformity, people want to be like other people. You might conform to these values in another country just to belong: often stereotypes reflect social roles groups play, e. g. , women typically play nurturing roles (caregivers), men are domineering. Study describing gender roles switching: women are primary breadwinners vs. men being communal. Some of the stereotypes in society might come from the roles we play: taxi drivers tend to be aggressive and risky drivers. Subtyping: maintain negative attitudes about the group as a whole, which allows maintenance of stereotypes & prejudice, allows people to feel non-prejudiced; you can feel good about yourself, egalitarian attitude, e. g. , be(cid:455)o(cid:374)(cid:272)e"s uper(cid:271)o(cid:449)l perfor(cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:272)e displa(cid:455)i(cid:374)g (cid:272)hara(cid:272)teristi(cid:272)s of bla(cid:272)k.
