Allport (1937) considered 49 diff def"ns of the term before he decided on one he liked. Personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms w/i the ind that is organized and relatively enduring and that influences his/her interactions w/, and adaptations to, the env"t (including the intrapsychic, physical, and social env"t). Affects how ppl adapt to social situation. Some ppl will feel that personality is more stable than others. Ppl might be more outgoing w/ frds, in a social setting. Around this time (in uni) is when personality disorders become prominent. In the early days, personality wasn"t considered a separate area in psych; instead it usually appeared as a topic of abnormal psych or social pysch.
