Media: the means through which a message is conveyed. Media that communicate messages to a mass (large) audience. Mass communication: the transmission of messages by a person or group through a medium to a mass (large) audience. Lasts a long time but is stuck in a particular space. Because people have to go to the message to receive it. Transmits over physical distance (i. e. , emphasis on space) Requires an interaction with it in some way. Do not have to put a lot of thought to understand what the person is saying. Can change/vary between hot & cold depending on time period, social context, use. Simple interpretations, do not take a lot of thought. Does not have to be sitting in the same spot. "the medium is the message" - marshall mcluhan. The medium itself has an impact on the social world both positive and negative.
