Document Summary

Radical at the time of inception but overtime becomes common sense. Therefore we perform studies in order to debunk the obvious. From this conclusion the argument that prohibition (banning of alcohol) is beneficial came to be as it would lower crime rates. Data from murder rates (best crime to study as its unlikely to be underreported) demonstrates that rates of this crime actually increased during this time. After the end of prohibition, murder rates decreased which, going against common sense, demonstrates that prohibition will not fix the problem. Prohibition spawned unintended consequence of organized crime (aligned under common need for alcohol, organize crime according to this need) (1) formulate question,(2) review existing literature, (3) select method, (4) collect data, (5) analyze data, (6) report results. Validity (measuring what you think youre measuring) & reliability (consistent results) Variables: take on two or more values (e. g. gender, religion, ses > basic measure of stratification)
