Document Summary

Week 2: chapter 6 networks, groups, bureaucracies and societies. Our actions are predicated by more than our perceived individuality: when examining social phenomena, we must consider the ways we are socialized to perceive the world and the demands brought on by social conformity. Norms of solidarity refer to the shared ideals and conduct within a group. We must consider scale and context within this phenomena. We may act differently as members of a nation than as partners in a relationship. You may not behave in the same way with friends as you might with your parents. Groups often develop deep ties across members and this can facilitate loyalty to the organization and anxiety if perceived as acting disloyally. People don"t disobey authorities because they fear ridicule, punishment, etc. Structures of authority tend to render people obedient. Social network: bounded set of individuals who are linked by the exchange of material or emotional resources.
