Norms of solidarity demand conformity: when relationships are formed between friends, loved ones, spouses, teammates, and comrades-in-arms, shared values or norms of solidarity about behaviour are developed. These norms of solidarity often overrule the morality of one"s actions for the sake of sustaining the relationship. Structures of authority tend to render people obedient: most individual"s find it difficult to disobey authorities because they fear ridicule, ostracism, and punishment, stanley milgram: social psychologist who conducted the electric shock experiment. Milgram"s experiment teaches us that as soon as we are introduced to a structure of authority, we are inclined to obey those in power. Bureaucracies are highly effective structures or authority: bureaucracy: a large, impersonal organization comprising of clearly defined positions arranged in a hierarchy. Consists of a permanent, salaried staff of qualified experts and written goals, rules, and procedures. Ideally, staff members always try to find ways of running the bureaucracy more efficiently achieving the bureaucracy"s goals at the least cost.
