Document Summary

Week 1: lecture 1: tuesday may 3, 2016. Statistics is a way of reasoning, along with a collection of tools and methods designed to help us understand the world. Establish the context of the data values by asking your self: who what when where. Individual cases (individuals) are the objects described by a set of data. For example, in a set of gpa values, the individuals are the students. A variable is any characteristic of an individual case (or an individual). A variable can take different values on different cases. For example, some variables for a student may be their gpa, gender, or year of study. There are two types of variables: categorical and quantitative. When a variable names categories and answers questions about how cases fall into those categories, we call it a categorical variable. For example, gender and college major are categorical variables. Categorical variables place an individual into one of several groups or categories.
