Definite pitch e. g. timpani, african talking drum. Some of them can have particular pitches, some don"t: tighter membrane = higher pitch, larger membrane = lower pitch, stretching the membrane changes the pitch. Indefinite pitch most other drums: chordophone: sound is produced by a vibrating string activated by striking, plucking, or bowing. Zither an instrument in which the strings run the length of the body. Drone a continuous sound on one or more fixed pitches: creates a humming sound in the background.
