VPMA93H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Tonality, Klangfarbenmelodie, Vocal Folds
Document Summary
Melody a succession of pitches that form a distinctive, coherent musical unit. Aspects of melody: range narrow, medium, wide lowest pitch to highest pitch. E. g. my vocal cords vs. piano: contour level, undulating, ascending, descending, arch-shaped range. How does the melody move: motion conjunct, disjunct, ornamentation unornamented, highly ornamented. Extra elements that enriches the melody (squiggly line looking w with a stroke through it) above music piece = put an ornament on the melody. Klangfarbenmelodie a technique where instruments maintaining constant pitches drop in and out of the orchestra, creating a melody of tone colours. Phrase a self-contained portion of a melody like a clause in a sentence: regular or symmetrical same length, # of units (notes) easy to predict notes. Antecedent, consequent two musical phrases, the second of which is a concluding response to or resolution of the first complements the 1st phrase, regular/symmetric.
