Document Summary
Lecture 8: arch topic 3: analysis and interpretation. Potassium-argon dating (retrometric dating): used to date volcanic rock. Useful in regions with lots of volcanism (rock = heated -> drives out argon -> k decays to argon over time at known rate) Every method = flawed and has limitations. Ecofacts: natural objects used or affected by people (not artifacts) Zooarchaeology: animal remains (domestication, hunting patterns, etc. ) Ages on bones (age of death) -> Palaeoethnobotany: study of plant remains - look at process of domestication. Simple features: i. e. hearths, burials, storage pits, post holes. Complex: made up of other features (i. e. buildings, houses, temples, granaries, etc. ) Sites: place where evidence of past human activity has occurred/preserved. Regions: largest and most flexible spatial cluster. Can have many sites in a region. Culturally - area occupied by the huron-wendat. Link fragmentary arch record with specific human behaviours. Experimental arch: reproduce ancient processes in modern world -> apply knowledge to arch record.
