Topic 3: analysis and interpretation ( in general, analysis takes at least 3 times as long as excavations) Any object made or modified by people. Archaeologists specialize in particular types- especially: stone tools, ceramics ( pottery) Natural object used or affected by people. The study of animal remains in the archeological record. The study of a plant remains in the archeological record. Eg seeds, pollen, phytoliths ( silicon dioxide nodules from plant cells) Complex features= eg buildings ( house, temples, granaries, etc) Simple features- eg hearths, burials, storage pits, post holes. Spatial clusters of artifacts, features and/ or eco facts. A place where evidence of past human activity is preserved. Boundaries may be well or poorly defined. Site may be complex ( eg a city) or simple ( eg a kill site) Defined: geographically- river drainage, a valley, an island, ecologically- (cid:862) (cid:271)oreal forest(cid:863), (cid:862) ar(cid:272)ti(cid:272)(cid:863, culturally- eg area occupied by the huron wendat.
