Document Summary
Ant100 - lecture 8 - the archeological record. Everything in the world that remains of physical remains from everything in the past that happened with humans. Because of intervening cultural and natural processes, the archeological record is not always a direct reflection into the past. Pompeii premise - pompeii was destroyed in hours by a volcanic eruption. Every archeologist wishes that sites were like this but in reality, many are not this. Ecofact: natural object that has been used or modified by people. (food, plants, animal remains) Features: a material that remains from human activity but you cannot pick it up and move it. (house, fireplaces, a midden. ) Archeological site: a place where there is evidence of past human activity that is preserved. This is the entry into the archeological record. Places that are dry and cold preserve things pretty well. Carnivores and rodents eat or tend to chew through artifacts. Soil chemistry = can destroy or sometimes preserve things.
