Crete, very advanced society, fell because of earthquakes and tsunamis. Bronze age greece c. 3000-1100 bce: the dominant agean cultures are the minoan and the myceneans. This era is the source of mythological heroes and epic poems (hercules, the iliad, the odyssey. ) Greek dark ages c. 1100-750 bce: invaders from the north devastate the region. Depopulation, poverty and cultural isolation result in the loss of technological knowledge. Geometric and archaic periods c. 750-480 bce: develops with the emergence of city states in greek world in 9th and 8th centuries. Major city states such as sparta, corinth and athens fought amongst themselves, but banded together to fight the barbaric persians. The human figure emerges as a prominent subject, stone temples are constructed, literature, philosophy and mathematics flourish. There is no evidence of painting on panels or walls due to time, but we can extrapolate stylistic choices through mosaics and vase paintings.
