On the Wings of Victory:
Parthenon / Acropolis
Mythical founder and hero of Athens. Athena Poleus (Athena for the city) statue didn’t
have a form (aniconic) an olive tree that fell from the sky. Every 4 years she was taken
out and paraded around. Smoke rising up is were the great altar of Athena was. Sacrifice
excuse to share meat. On the altar slaughter the animal poor blood on altar then fire bones
and fat (offerings to god) then meat is shared.
Encouraged to move from back to front of building.
Panathenaic Amphora 530BCE
Prize for the victor in the Panathenaic games. Small opening storage jar. Large, stored
olive oil. If you won u would get 60 of these filled with olive oil, which was expensive.
Bad before hand for the games and victor could imagine himself winning the race. Other
side is Athena with shield with emblem. Athletics and warfare joined. Excellence was a
Greek temple plan should remember
Parthenon looks similar to Doric plan, colonnades on all four sides. 2 set of columns
span whole length looks like two rows of columns from outside. The Cella is the main
room where the cult statue stands is divided into sections. Also shortens span roof has to
cover. Reflecting pool on the left. Adyton is peculiar to Parthenon it is a back room, no
access from the front and we don’t know what it was used for most ppl think it was used
for cult or ritual activity. Opisthodomos has treasures and goodies. Interior of Greek
temples wasn’t always for everyone. Athena’s statue looked like her true appearance
appearing before humans. Most cult activity that surrounds Greek temple is on the
outside. On the bottom is an elevation rendering. Above is a plan. Statue of Athena is 11
meters. Reason columns constructed on 2 floors is because diameter was small and with
Doric columns they have to be very thick, then would lose lots of interior pace. Thus
using 2 floors could still use Doric columns without compromising space, don’t have
capital so don’t know if it was Ionic columns for sure rather than Doric. Most likely ionic
Architect Iktinos and Kallikrates. Numerology 9:4 2n+1
Iktinos is the architect and Killikrates is more like the site engineer.
Golden ratio isn’t used. Instead it’s the ratio 9:4 throughout the building. Shown both in
the front and top of the plan. Its called an Octastyle building cuz it has 8 columns on the
side is 17 which 2 times 9 plus one. Diameter of the column at the base, from the center
of one column to the next is 9 to 4.
Curvature of the Stylobate last of the first steps the steps above it are also curved so the
center is higher. 34cm? Subtle effect. Everything is modified according to this curvature. February 5, 2014
Columns are not standing straight they all lean inward by cm? The four corner columns
are slightly thicker than the rest. Petruvious says its because the sky is eating away at the
Corner Triglyph Problem
Corner contraction. Every other tyiglyph theirs a column in the dead center of it.
Swelling of the column itself. Edge of column bottom is larger top smaller. Line that
connects them is not a straight line, edge is slightly swelling. Temple of Hera also uses
Entasis, that is more obvious, so it doesn’t correct optical illusion. Scholars think it’s
about animating the columns as in breathing life into them. The heavier the building the
more majestic it is and since the columns are carrying something so heavy that’s
translated in the swellingness of them.
Porch of the Caryatids. Erechtheion. Athenian Acropolis
Serving as slaves to hold up porch probably not true. But they are maidens serving
Athena and Poseidon. Agrigento (Sicily). Reconstruction of the Temple to Olympian
Zeus (Atlas Figures) Holding up the building they are really big.
Obsessed with numbers. Zenos paradox, notion of infinity, space and time has to do with
democratic institution in which everyone had freedom and power. *need to know from
Sculptures 3D. Doric frieze discontinuous square relief. Ionic frieze inside is continuous
called low relief (bas relief) if relief is half way protruding then its high relief if its less
then its low relief. No other building at the time had used Doric and Ionic together. Doric
has feeling that it’s from the mainland while Ionic is practices in Ionian and has symbolic
representation of east Greek. Combining two means they have the best of two worlds
beauty of the east and tradition of the mainland.
