Document Summary

Dark places are where dust (mixed in with gas) is blocking starlight. Dust comes from death of stars of previous generations. The wavelength of infrared light is larger than the size of a dust particle. Dust tends to block visible light (shorter wavelengths) but allows infrared light (longer wavelengths) to pass. Milky way has about 200 billion stars and a diameter of about 200,000 light years. Densely packed sphere of hundreds of thousands of very old stars. Low-inclination orbits (with some up and down wiggle) Stars in the disk travel in elliptical orbits. Spiral arms are where the orbits bunch up. Lots of blue stars --> lots of young stars. Lots of dust among the gas and stars.
