Document Summary
If you know a star"s distance and its brightness, you can figure out the luminosity of a star. You can figure out the temperature by the colour it is and then its chemical composition by looking at its absorption lines. Williamina fleming pickering"s maid who turned out to be good at mathematics and then became his computer. her and other brilliant women were taking spectras from the sky, and they began to see patterns within them. Pickering (a scientist at harvard i believe) and his associates grouped spectra into similar groups and labeled them alphabetically, without really knowing what the similarities were. Annie cannon figured out that some categories of stars were similar, figuring out there was about 7 categories of stars. A, b, f, g, k, m and o are the categories (need to know this) she also realised that if ordered like this: obafgkm, forming a pattern. (know the letters and the order)
