Document Summary

Scientists are using these techniques to improve cancer therapy: this is nanotechnology! Can be given intravenously and move through bloodstream. Cytosolic and exoplasmic face/leaflet of the lipid bilayer. The zoomed-in view shows cell membrane: two faces or leaflets, therefore bilayer. Cytosolic face is orange: faces cytosol. Other leaflet is exoplasmic, does not face cytosol. If you look at golgi apparatus, you see one membrane with cytosolic face and exoplasmic face (faces inside of golgi lumen: stays exoplasmic, no flip-flopping, phospholipids don"t go from one side to another (i. e. cytosolic to exoplasmic) Vesicle is a small membrane bound compartment, shown as circle in diagram. If you look at the formation of the vesicle, the membrane"s faces stay the same. Nucleus has inner and outer layer: both are phospholipid bilayers with two leaflets/faces. Glycolipids and glycoproteins: formed by adding sugar groups. Sugar group on protein: glycoprotein: found on the exoplasmic leaflet.
