Document Summary

Lecture 5: ecology and evolution of harvested populations. Humans harvest plants, animals, and other products from the natural world. Some harvesting is inevitable for living organisms to survive. Harvest out the recruitment and leave the stock alone. New individuals as a result of reproduction. A simple model for how populations grow dn/dt = r n [(k - n) / k] Dn/dt = change in abundance over time r = intrinsic rate of population growth of the species. If there is no limit, the population will grow exponentially q. Density-dependent growth rate can limit population size: tern carrying capacity on islands is limited by nesting space. Limit the ability for individuals to reproduce. Maintaining the population at 90% and it is pretty good. We are not gettign enoug hfish, only harvesting 10% Arrow 1: harvest 10%, and then let the population recover back to carrying capacity. Similarily, it has its own pros and cons.
