Document Summary
Two main mechanisms of cell differentiation: asymmetric division: sister cells born different, symmetric division: sister cells become different as a result of influences acting on them after birth. Two main mechanisms for differentiating cells from one another one is an intrinsic mechanism and the other is extrinsic. Signal transduction into the cell changes its gene expression, so it expresses a different set of genes compared to its sister cell. The end result is the same in both cases differences in gene expression between different sets of cells, but arises in different ways. Asymmetric cell division and cell differentiation in c. elegans. Image showing structure of the cell with white light, and overlapping with a marker for the dna. There are now two separate cells after division. Extrinsic mechanisms of cell differentiation: i direct lateral inhibition: direct lateral inhibition creates a pattern of isolated differentiated cells within the tissue.
