Document Summary

Bio230 s2 lec3 cell differentiation & structure maintenance nov 13. Cell differentiation: extrinsic mechanisms associated with symmetric division that requires external forces to make the daughter cells differentiate, direct lateral inhibition, create a pattern of isolated differentiated cells, the cells would first be divided equally. With the transmembrane proteins (the pink stuff in the pic. ) present, some cells would randomly gain an advantage that is gaining these transmembrane proteins so that these cells get differentiated. The differentiated cell (green) would have the inhibitory effects on its neighbouring cells, which means that the cells around it is not differentiated. Example: fly sensory: notch signaling notch receptor & delta -> can vary, 2 cells both with notch and delta. Eventually, one cell would win with delta and inactive notch so that it"s differentiated/specialized: note that the cell with inactive notch would have the delta and be specialized.
