CIN LECTURE 12: ANIMATION
Film Forms:
Documentaries are NATTATIVE, CATEGORICAL, RHETORICAL in form
Avant-Garde are NARRATIVE, ABSTRACT, ASSOCIATIONAL in form
ANIMATION RHETORICAL, CATEROGORICAL, NARRATIVE, ABSTRACT,
ASSOSIATIONAL in form (depending on how it is made)
Animation is typically characterized by at least one of two attributes (1) the
presentation of imagery that has no “real-world” status beyond the film’s universe, (2) the
creation of movement through a succession of individual static images (animation can put
inanimate objects into motion, such as a coffee cup)
In 1896, Mélièse produced films in a glass studio depicted in France (story is told in
“Hugo”) early work can be seen in “A Trip to the Moon”
Animation and real life could be used together in film
Cinematic art entered the realm of fantasy; film retreats from reality in order to do this
Superimpositions are used to project objects onto another image
Utilizes STOP-MOTION ANIMATION (using one frame at a time) 3 invented when
he filmed a hurse that stopped when the camera jammed and then disappeared across
screen
Types of Animation:
1. DRAWN ANIMATION (CEL ANIMATION) done by drawings running at
24frames/second
2. CUT-OUT ANIMATION done by layering many planes in frames on top of each
other (such as in Ballet Mécanique)
3. COMPUTER ANIMATION
4. DIRECT ANIMATION (celluloid must be used)
5. CLAY ANIMATION (a.k.a. CLAYMATION)
Ex. “Wallace and Gromit”
6. PUPPET/MODEL ANIMATION (manipulated by people holding wires and moving
puppets)
MOVEMENT [CAMERA] [PROJECTOR] ILLUSION OF MOVEMENT
Norman McLaren on Animation “Animation is not the art of drawings that move,
but rather the art of movements that are drawn. What happens between each frame is
more important than what happens on each frame.”
Can shoot live action and have it be Animated (if the movements are shot and
edited so that they do not occur organically)
Most Animations rely on an other-world realm (such as talking animals, people
dropping from great heights and being fine, etc.)
