Helps understand social meaning of criminology/sociological phenomenon, how narratives are constructed and take shape. But: can also be used analyze policy development/variation (policy as independent variable). Qualitative analyses depend on the data colledcted and the analyyical abilities of the researcher. Qualitative data analysis is a sense-making process, concepts are defined during analysis, not prior to data collection. Research design: how a study is set up to enable particular inferences. Analytic induction: an interative process in which hypothesis develop early in the data analysis process and subsequent evidence is compared to either support or refute themes and relationships between concepts. Steps include collecting data, forming tentative hypotheses, assessing explanations, discovering. Theory and method connected in qualitative data analysis. Ideal type: an abstract description of the social phenomenon used as a mode to compare data. A benchmark, utopia, of measuring rod used to identify similarities or differences between cases.
