Document Summary
Vegetal pole: provides nutrition to the embryo, induces the mesoderm, forms the endoderm. Later into the gut: originally, people thought that the pole was just a passive group of cells that was a part of the embryo, vegetal cells. Vegt protein is already present in the egg from the beginning. It activates sox17, which is needed for endoderm specification: autonomous specification. Vegt determines the fate of the vegetal cells and turns them into endoderm. Activated nodal-related proteins that induce the mesoderm. They move very actively into the embryo during gastrulation. Movement is important to move the mesoderm into the embryo. Endoderm is essential to induce the overlying cells in the marginal zone to become the mesoderm. Cells talk to and instruct each other. Mesoderm induction: induction of dorsal mesoderm. The nieuwkoop centre is special because it contains vegt and beta- catenin and together, they produce a large amount of nodal-related proteins (very different from ventral region)
