International law now completely bans the use of torture, but this has not always been the case. Was used in the past by heads of state, religious clergy and local leaders of various states. Torture has long been employed by reasonable people under the view of managing civilization. Aristotle favoured torture, direct links between just war theory and practices of torture. Torture was routine in rome and even in these ancient times and places there were rules who can be tortured in the interest of gathered evidence. Jean calas protestant in a catholic majority kingdom, charged with murdering his son who was threatening to convert to catholicism, however evidence showed suicide. Was a highly biased and unfair hearing, prior to his conviction he was also tortured to confess to the murder of his son (interrogational torture- to get information). Death by punitive torture, harming the body in a punitive way. Historically torture has been a common method of capital punishment.
