Renaissance: rebirth, revisitation of greek and roman (classical) culture: proceeded feudalist middle ages europe; hierarchy of ownership and absolute rule. Focus on the synthesis of roman ideas and christian context. In 1553 mary becomes queen and england returns to catholicism. In 1558 elizabeth i becomes queen and returns again to protestantism: in 1588 the english defeat the spanish armada and emerge as a world power, people suddenly allowed to ascend hierarchy via money. James burbage: built a theatre called the theatre (uncommon word at the time: first privately paid-for plays; before were for free and nanced by public tax. Many dramatic venues: court performances, private, public, festivals, etc. William shakespeare (1564-1616: born in stratford-on-avon; became a working actor & playwright in london. Most playwrights became respectable poets; playwriting wasn"t respectable: shakespeare less educated/re ned and unapologetic playwright, became shareholder in lord chamberlain/king"s men. Plays belonged to company, not playwright: moved to the globe in 1599; then died in 1616.
