Ultimate embodiment of consumerism, how to exist in modern culture, how you buy things, how you move around space, how you be modern. Represents consumer modernity yet also represents what"s happening with tradition and how people should be behave. Dangerous because different from how people used to live. Urbanized (moved to city) but weren"t middle class. Wouldn"t moved to city without modernization and industrialization. Don"t have income to partake in consumer culture but important part of modernization. Day divided to value per hour (exclusive to industrial jobs) Some people in china thought that they should find own industrial modernity like japan-> take care of itself. People know they need to modernize but other people (foreign powers) in control of it. Look outside the cities and see the peasantry there.
