Purpose of northern gateway pipeline: transportation of oil from alberta to the pacific, marine transportation of oil. Timeline: idea first proposed in the mid-2000s, announced in 2006 o. Pros and cons: environmental damage and destruction. Murrelet: damage to aboriginal land, more money and jobs, more greenhouse gases, contributes to global warming, efficiency, possibility of oil spills that could be very destructive for marine life o. Are aboriginal groups in favour or not: some groups have agreed, haida nation chiefs agreed but were consequently stripped of their leadership by their tribe, shows divide among aboriginals. Alternatives: don"t build it, invest in renewable energy. Purpose of pipeline: to move bitumen oil form alberta to the coast of british columbia, international market. Asia, many different countries that have a high demand but few resources. Natural gas in to add to the bitumen since it is very thick to thin it. Once it gets to bc it goes out on tankers.
